Respected Muslim cleric to issue ruling against suicide bombings
A highly respected mainstream Muslim scholar is expected to announce a fatwa (ruling according to Islamic law) against terrorism and suicide bombing in the name of Islam.
Sheikh Dr. Tahir ul-Qadri, a widely recognized authority on Islamic jurisprudence, will issue a comprehensive fatwa prohibiting terrorism and suicide bombing at a press conference in London on Tuesday, the Jerusalem Post reports:
The Pakistani-born Dr. Qadri has authored an unprecedented, 600-page fatwa on why suicide bombings and terrorism are un-Islamic and scripturally forbidden. The ruling is the most comprehensive theological refutation of Islamist terrorism to date.
The fatwa will also be posted on the Internet and in English, making it readily accessible. It will also set an important precedent and allow other scholars to similarly condemn the ideas behind terrorism.
According to reports in the British media,
The 59-year-old former Pakistani minister says he wants it to persuade young Muslims to turn away from becoming terrorists.
As Qadri says, quote, “The reality is whatever these terrorists are doing it is not martyrdom. All these activities are taking them to hellfire.”
His motivation for issuing the edict stems from concerns about British Muslim college students who are becoming terrorists.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the man accused of the failed Christmas Day bombing of a U.S.-bound airliner, apparently was radicalized while studying in London before 2008.
Many critics of Islamic fundamentalism have bemoaned the scarcity of voices within Islam condemning terror for ostensibly religious purposes.
As we say in Israel, kein yirbu — may this increase!

Malaysian Christians told to find another word for God — or else
Americans of all faiths know the word “Allah” as the Muslim name for the one God. In Arabic-speaking nations and other countries where Muslims are dominant, however, ”Allah” is a generic term for “God” that is also used by non-Muslims to refer to God — somewhat akin to the English word “Lord” or “God” (with a capital “g”)
This heretofore unremarkable fact is causing major problems in Malaysia, a predominantly Muslim country in southeast Asian (it sits in two land masses south of Thailand), where at least five churches have been attacked by arsonists recently — sparked apparently by Muslim demands that Malaysian not use the word “Allah” as their translation for “God.”
One of the protest organizers, Faisal Aziz, who heads a national organization of Muslim Malaysian students, told the Wall Street Journal that non-Muslims using the word is “an unnecessary provocation.” The WSJ continues:
Meanwhile, the Malaysian judiciary’s main Web site was hit by hackers shortly before the church attacks. A hacker calling him or herself “Brainwash” replaced the site’s main page with a message warning non-Muslims to avoid using the term Allah, saying it is “restricted to Muslims only.”
Muslim writings contain the 99 “most beautiful names” of God, including the One and Only, the Living One, the Real Truth, the Hearer, the Seer, the Benefactor, and the Constant Forgiver. Last we checked, “The One Arsonists Follow” wasn’t on there.

Hamas harrumphs “Miss Palestine” beauty contest (But was there a “swimming burka” competition?)

Hamas beauty queens?
Hamas ministers took time this week to issue a full-throated objection to a “Miss Palestine” pageant scheduled for later in the month.
The contest was planned to include Arab Israelis and women from the West Bank (women from Gaza can’t get into Israel due to border closings and other military restrictions); two hundred women ages 18-22 had vied for spots for the competition, which judges education, personality and beauty — but no swimsuit competition, in deference to Muslim sensibilities.
Nonetheless, Hamas Culture Ministry said that the contest completely contradicts “Palestinian values and traditions” and is “a blind imitation of the Western traditions.”
The ministry called for pageant planners to “stop it immediately.”
Maybe they’d feel differently if the girls were modeling explosives belts.
