IDF fighters adopt Holocaust survivors

Hundreds of members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israeli police have adopted Holocaust survivors and vowed to help them with any problem.

The idea was proposed several months ago following a conversation between a police officer from a special unit and his neighbor, a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor, which quickly turned into a long and emotional heart-to-heart talk.

The officer, who was moved by the talk, decided to recruit his friends from the IDF and police’s elite units, and set up an extensive network of hundreds of officers and fighters, in compulsory and reserve service, to help the survivors.

Lebanon violates cease-fire with Israel

A Lebanese soldier opened fire on IDF troops across the border on Monday, prompting Israel to issue a strong warning against such provocations which, if not contained, could lead the two countries to war. Israel sent a letter of complaint to the U.N. stating that such actions could destabilize the region. This was the second cross-border shooting from Lebanon over the past two weeks. Thankfully, no one was injured in either incident.

In the summer of 2007, Israel fought a month-long war against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The war was instigated by a cross-border kidnapping, carried out by Hezbollah, of three Israeli soldiers. When the war ended with a cease-fire, there was a public outcry to bring the kidnapped soldiers back home. Not knowing if the soldiers were dead or alive at the time, the Israeli government agreed to release terrorists with blood on their hands in return for the kidnapped soldiers, whose corpses were returned in boxes.

Since the end of the war, the U.N.-brokered ceasefire agreement has routinely been breached by Hezbollah, in plain view of the UNIFIL forces who are stationed in Lebanon. Hezbollah continues to expand its deadly cache of weapons in blatant violation of  Security Council resolution 1701 that called for the group’s disarmament. Most of the weapons originate in Iran and are smuggled into Lebanon via Syria. Israel has repeatedly protested Hezbollah’s weapon smuggling in the U.N. to no avail, and has warned that Hezbollah is stockpiling weapons as a prelude to a future conflict.

Israel is urging the Lebanese army to investigate the cross-border shootings and to put an end to these incidences. If the shooter had been successful in killing or injuring Israeli troops, the IDF might be well into Lebanese territory by this time.

Remembering the raid on Entebbe

On July 4, 1976, Israeli commandos executed a daring raid to rescue hostages being held by hijackers in Entebbe, Uganda. This video tells the story — amazing stuff. Pretty sure even Jack Bauer and Chuck Norris would tip their hats to the Israeli forces who pulled it off:

IDF intercepts Gaza-bound ship

A French ship named “Dignity” carrying 17 anti-Israel activists — the only ship in the so-called “Freedom Flotilla” to set sail for Gaza — was intercepted peacefully by the Israeli Navy. According to the ship’s captain, when he first departed from Greece passengers claimed they were headed to Alexandria, Egypt. Only after leaving the port did they inform him of ther intention to sail towards Gaza.

Israeli marines boarded the French vessel and transferred the passengers to an Israeli ship where they received food and water and were visited by a doctor to determine their physical conditions. The passengers were then taken to Israel’s Ashdod port and were given the option to either leave Israel immediately and return to their home countries, or wait at a detention center for a judge to meet with them.

Rockets continue to fall on southern Israel

Rockets continue to rain down on southern Israel as the IDF remains steadfast in its policy of responding to each rocket attack. IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz told reporters that Hamas is allowing other terrorist organizations that operate in the Gaza strip to fire rockets into Israel. According to Gantz, Hamas is testing Israel to see how they will respond to each attack, and are turning a blind eye to the individuals responsible for firing the rockets.

The IDF’s policy is to retaliate for each attack, given that the response is limited in scope. The IDF does not want to escalate the situation to the point where it is dragged into a full confrontation with Hamas and prefers to minimize its response – so long as the rockets that land in Israel do not cause severe damage.

Israeli forces continue to be on high alert, while the defense establishment is anticipating an increase of violence in the lead up to the UN General Assembly vote for a Palestinian state this September.
