An Arab Winter for Christians

More on the plight of Christians in the Middle East:

The sectarian violence that followed the U.S. invasion of Iraq and fall of Hussein in 2003 has been brutal for all Iraqis, including Muslim Shiites and Sunnis. But for the nation’s fragile Christian communities, it has been catastrophic.

At least 54 Iraqi churches have been bombed and at least 905 Christians killed in various acts of violence since the U.S. invasion toppled Hussein in 2003, according to Archbishop Louis Sako of the Chaldean Catholic Church in the northern provinces of Kirkuk and Sulimaniya. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians have fled. A report on Iraq released Tuesday by Minority Rights Group International said that about 500,000 Christians remain in Iraq, down from an estimated 800,000 to 1.4 million in 2003.

Many Christians – 2 million in the past 20 years — have responded to this increasingly precarious and dangerous situation by fleeing the region. Meanwhile, the Christian population in one Middle Eastern country — Israel — has grown from 34,000 in 1948 to about 140,000 today.

Freedom of religion, anyone?

A great message to start the day

Wow … a short but powerful, emotional, moving appeal from Rev. Crisp on why it’s important for Christians to support Israel. A few sound bytes:

“When we unite to support Israel, we are truly better together”

“Some of us can do more than others, but everyone can do something”

“We must cast away the false teaching of replacement theology in our seminaries and bible schools”

“We must reject the easy apathy that too many Christians feel – we cannot be silent”

What a great way to start the day … or, as AIPAC president Lee Rosenberg said taking the podium after Rev. Crisp’s speech, “Wow … that was good!”

At the convention center waiting to hear from Rev. Dr. Tony Crisp … LOTS of recognition at this conference of the important role Christians play in supporting the Jewish state!

Egypt church bombing kills 21

In nearly all Middle Eastern countries besides democratic Israel, Christians are no longer safe. The New Year’s Day bombing of a Coptic Christian church that killed 21 worshipers at a holiday mass in Alexandria, Egypt served to underscore this point in deadly fashion.

While there used to be a thriving Christian communities in many Arab countries, that presence is sadly dwindling due to the constant threat to their safety and freedom. Under Palestinian rule in the West Bank and Gaza, Christians feel persecuted and often live in fear. In Israel, however, Christian holy sites are preserved and protected by the government, and religious freedom and is written into law.

Preacher sues own church over anti-Israel policies

Here’s a man in the U.K. who talks the talk and walks the walk — and good for him:

David Hallam, who preaches in Methodist churches around Birmingham, has accused his own church of wasting funds to pursue a vendetta against Israel. There are no Methodist churches in either Israel or the Occupied Territories.

Mr Hallam, 62, a former labour MEP, said: “What I object to is money which I am putting on the collection plate on a Sunday being used to fund a political campaign against the Jewish state. This is both discriminatory and a misuse of a charity’s funds.

“The Methodist Church seems to think it has a God given right to tell Jews how to run their affairs. It is very disturbing we are getting involved in a territory where we don’t have any members or churches.”
